چکیده

A large scale optical switch array based on guided-wave technology using banyan network architecture is demonstrated. Banyan network architecture is the simplest N×N network connecting a input port to all the output ports. A banyan network optical switch array serves as a base for constructing many classes of switch networks, as we propose in this report. We fabricated a 32×32 switch and measured its characteristics. Drive voltage was about ±12 V and extinction ratio was 18 dB, and the average insertion loss was 18 dB. Preliminary experiments were conducted on a 64×64 device. The use of proton exchanged waveguides makes a 10 mm radius of curvature feasible. key words: optical switch, switch matrix, waveguide, LiNbO3

Design of Non-Blocking and Rearrangeable Modified Banyan Network with Electro-Optic MZI Switching Elements

Banyan networks are really attractive for serving as the optical switching architectures due to their unique properties of small depth and absolute signal loss uniformity. The fact has been established that the limitations of blocking nature and the nonavailability of proper connections due to non-rearrangeable property can be easily ruled out using electro-optic MZI switches as basic switching...

Performance Analysis on Negligible Blocking DC-based Optical Switching Networks Under Crosstalk Constraint

Banyan networks are attractive for serving as the optical switch architectures due to their nice properties of small depth and absolutely signal loss uniformity. Banyan structure is one of the candidates for serving as the directional-coupler (DC)-based switching systems that can switch signals at the rate of several terabits per second. Despite many advantages, optical banyan networks suffer f...

Non-blocking Optical Banyan Switch on SOI

An integrated spatially non-blocking 2x2 Banyan switch on silicon on insulator (SOI) is demonstrated. The device relying on thermally switched microring resonators has a footprint of less than 0.02 mm2 and shows negligible channel crosstalk. The presented novel switch topology features a high scalability for application in many-core interconnections for network on-chip architectures. Keywords-c...

Repackable Multi-plane Banyan-Type Optical Switching Fabrics

The multi-plane banyan-type switching fabric is a very promising architecture for building nonblocking optical switches. To avoid blocking states many copies of planes, i.e. log2N switching fabrics are connected in parallel, so we call this structure multi-plane. In this paper, repackably nonblocking multi-plane banyan-type switching fabrics are considered. Two repacking algorithms for multi-pl...

Technical Report

It is usually believed that the blocking probability of a switching network will increase with the increase of the failure rate of building components (e.g., links, switching elements, etc.) in the switch. In this report, we propose a mathematical model for evaluating the maximum blocking probability of optical banyan networks on vertical stacking when the link failures are considered. Based on...
